Hi Mike. I've been a lurker on this thread for some time and would like to comment on the so-called low inflation in the US. I live in Montreal Canada and vacation south of the border every two years or so. We are two families who usually rent a cottage and make our own meals etc. A few years back, we brought almost nothing with us when we headed south for most of the food and articles we needed were either cheaper or on par with the prices in Canada. Every other trip, we have had to bring more and more stuff. Last year we would have needed to bring just about everything except gas which is still cheaper in the US. The price of food is just ridiculous! And we shop at Sam's Club so as to get the best prices for large quantities! Example: 3 ears of corn for $1.50 US. In Montreal I pay $1.for a dozen! And this is in season for both localities. Potatoes were $5.US for 10 pounds. In Montreal I buy 50 pounds for the same price. I could go on and on for such staples as bread, fruits and vegetables (which we import from the US and cost us half the price of the US!),cheese, butter etc. From now on we are vacationing in Canada. Or take a plane to the islands. It is a bit more expensive, but the everything is included and I won't have to drive. I feel sorry for the low and middle-income Americans who must be having a difficult time making ends meet. Obviously someone is price gouging out there.
