Obviously someone is price gouging out there.

Franco, you sure got that right. And the someone in the food industry is everyone after the poor producer. Such as processors and grocers.

My brother (a veterinarian) was telling me that the hog farmers, his clients, are getting absolutely killed and many will probably leave the biz. Hog prices have dropped to some incredibly long historical low, with hogs going for about 16 US bucks per hundred weight. (I think I remember that right) Yet, when I go to the grocery store I never noticed any reduction in the price of pork chops. So it is going somewhere in the middle. For hogs it is the packing plants.

One hog farmer in Iowa was so frustrated that he figured he would let his hogs go wild on a few hundred wooded acres. For $100 he would let people come in and hunt a pig and keep it! Figured he could make some money, for a change, and ride out the storm. But then the PETA maniacs heard about it and caused him so much trouble that he scrapped the idea. And I'm not making this up! -g-
