01/14 12:04 United Natural to cut costs by closing N.H. center

DAYVILLE, Conn., Jan 14 (Reuters) - Natural food distributor United Natural Foods Inc.
<UNFI.O> said Thursday it would consolidate its northeastern operations after closing one of three
centers in a move to save up to $3.4 million annually. The company said it would shut its
Chesterfield, N.H., distribution center and shift operations to its Dayville, Conn., and New Oxford,
Pa., facilities in the spring.

United Natural said it would begin to realize about half the savings by midsummer and begin to see
the remainder by January 2000.

Savings will stem from trimming overlapping facility costs, fleet and transportation costs, inventory
and staffing.

The company is offering the roughly 150 full-time Chesterfield employees similar positions at its six
remaining distribution centers. It will offer assistance to those who choose not to relocate.

United Natural said the plan came on the heels of a study by consultant KPMG Peat Marwick after
its November 1997 acquisition of Chesterfield, N.H.-based distributor Stow Mills.
