Scumbria,

Apparently the mask problem is a late mask problem and has been fixed but the new wafer starts won't filter through until February.
Late in the qtr I estimated that AMD would ship about 500k 400MHz chips. (In fact they shipped 400k). This was down from early estimates of about 1 million but because the 400 ramp up appeared to be late it didn't appear to be a problem with yields. In fact, AMD had to down bin 800K-1 million of the would-be higher MHz chips to the 300-333 speed grade with 66MHz bus and essentially dump them. This is what caused the low ASP. We expected this when we started seeing the 66MHz bus chips on Pricewatch. Unfortunately, these chips still showed up as good die on the radar screen. AMD dumped them, there is no excess inventory. That's not all bad.
Even then, 400k 400 MHz chips was pretty darn good. It's a real shame
that this mask problem showed up or profits would have really gone through the roof.
Yields on 450 Mhz chips begiining in Feb when the fixed wafers pass through should be good.
Regards, Jim
