I suspect that MSFT might have been worried about another problem
ala the aborted Intuit buyout.

I read your analysis of MSFT vs. NSCP. I agreed with much of it, however I believe that NSCP might do much better at Intranets for several reasons, including:
1. IIOP is a much better basis for developing enterprise systems.
2. NSCP is based upon Internet standards, rather than providing a
bridge to standards. They can (at least theoretically) be more
efficiently designed.
3. Java helps level the playing field. Many developers are going to
use Java Beans rather than Captive-X, not only because it can be
used by a wider audience, but also because it is great
technology. True, the marketplace doesn't give a damn about the
technology, but developers do. On the other hand, MSFT does have
excellent Java technology themselves.

If NSCP can get many more converts like KPMG, then they can do very
well. Of course, you still be quite correct that this is not enough
to maintain enough of their marketshare and keep such a high growth
rate and justify their market cap. Only time will tell...
