Golden Books Didn't Hold Sale Talks With Disney, CEO Says

New York, Jan. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Golden Books Family Entertainment Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Richard Snyder said the struggling children's-book publisher hasn't talked to Walt Disney Co. about a possible sale.

Golden Books has had ''some discussions with Disney about expanding their relationship, but not from an equity point of view,'' Snyder said in an interview.

Disney Chairman and Chief Executive Michael Eisner told Bloomberg News Tuesday that the company ''had talks'' with Golden Books when asked if Disney will buy the publisher. Eisner said it's a possibility Disney, the world's No. 2 entertainment company, could buy Golden Books. Eisner didn't elaborate on the nature or time of the talks or likelihood of an deal.

Shares of New York-based Golden Books more than tripled amid speculation about a possible Disney purchase. The shares rose 1 3/16 to 1 15/16 in late morning trading of 15 million shares, making it the most active in U.S. markets. Earlier, it rose as much as 2 1/2.

In August, New York-based Golden Books said it had hired investment bank Allen & Co. to explore options, including a possible sale. The company has a licensing agreement with Disney to produce books based on Disney characters and stories.

Disney wasn't immediately available for further comment.

Disney, based in Burbank, California, rose 5/8 to 36 93/4.
