I like what I have read about pcroomlink. Been a hotel GM for many years and can definitely see the potential here. Unfortunately, my property is too small for their requirements. Can say this though. I converted twenty of our rooms to Deluxe a couple of years ago and one of the things added was hookups for computers directly in the phones. Keep in mind, I am at a small property in Indiana with no major highways within 50 miles. We do have lots of industry and 85% of my business is Corporate. Highway 50 is kind of our connection to the world. At any rate, a few years ago we noticed an increase in guests with computers. So we accomodated them. Started seeing this more and more which caused a problem. These guests would get on the phone lines and be on them for hours, tying up one line for this entire time. Eventually, we had to add 8 more lines so that our other guest could use their phones. Now it is not uncommon to see 3 or 4 guests a night with laptops. Another problem with using computers in hotels is the switchboard. First is the access number. You have to dial 9 for an outside line. Some hotels have a slight delay from the time you dial 9 and the time it gives you a line. This is a terrible problem when using a computer. The other problem is quality. Like cable, the further you get from the source, the weaker the signal. So rooms on the far end of the hotel get less quality on their screen plus a longer delay in loading data. PCRoomlink will solve all of these problems. Frees up phone lines while providing the guest with quality internet service. It sounds like it could be bigger than the in-room movies that hit the market about 8 years ago. Guest were able to order movies in their rooms that haven't made it to video yet. This was great for the industry because 1) it created another source of revenue with no direct expense for the property, and 2) it opened the industry up to a new customer base. It brought locals in for weekend getaways. It also gave guests more of a reason to stay on property, especially if you had a bar and restaurant. More profits! I think this will have a very similar impact on the industry. Actually, I think it will be BIGGER. Think of the many people who can't afford computers and the monthly fees for internet access. Now they can rent a room and surf the net. For a romantic getaway they can do the dirty deed and access filth all night if they want. This really is huge if you ask me. I hope they make them available to small properties soon. I am going to try to call and feel them out. Thanks for listening to my thoughts. This was copied from my RB post.
