Ken

I just got done reading additional articles about NC type STBs and I am becoming more interested. I have never been a STB man, sticking to servers and compute platforms mainly, but there is some rationale for this type of NC device. The argument is that the NC will be an appliance that is very video and web oriented, and can operate with satellite (USSB ...) OpenCable, and xDSL broadband sources, as well as have a built in DVD or DVD changer, and be a useful internet device, all using the TV for the window. With Flat Panel TVs and Home theatres becoming a growing trend too, this idea appeals to me much more so than a cable only device STB. Cable cos are notorious for providing low quality at a high price because of their monopoly, and I wonder if the new SFA/GI STBs are too closed to catch on, especially in retail.

What more can you share in this regard ? Much appreciated.

As you and others have said, anything promoting VOD will only be a positive for server suppliers, but I am now intrigued by this Advanced STB concept, encompassing the entire digital video issue in the home. I think consumers will like it as long as it is not promoted as a replacement for your home PC. I think some NCs even have HAN (Home Area Network) and Firewire (1394) ports if you did want to pipe the video in your PC upstairs.
