Agnew did eventually serve time for the cash bribes he took while Governor, didn't he? Or was that probation, too? Agnew - a class guy - always kept a safe with shoeboxes of bribe cash in the closet behind his desk as Governor. Supposedly, in the White House as well. Nixon's bag man. Seems like a different standard is being applied here, somehow. BTW, it was mostly Pat Buchanan who wrote those alliterating cracks. 'Pussillanimous Pussyfooters' (sp?) and so forth. I didn't know that Safire contributed any, but it could be so. Buchanan says Agnew just loved alliteration, but he wasn't as good as Buchanan at making that stuff up, apparently. Buchanan was Agnew's speechwriter and aide until Agnew got dumped, then he wrote most of Nixon's later speeches, as I recall. I don't know if he wrote the 'I am not a crook' speech. He admits to the Agnew speeches, with glee. Chaz
