The market is completely under the spell of the deteriorating situation in Brazil. Nobody knows whether this virus can spread as the Asian Flu did. It points up the uncomfortable fact that in a global market, inherently anarchistic, there is the constant danger of uncontrollable chaos. The closest thing to a governing entity is the USA - which has its president on trial for high crimes and misdemeanors. The American market, though hit hard, has never threatened to get out of control or lapse into a free fall. Nevertheless, when only three stocks in the Dow eke out gains, and blue chips like the following drop over three percent each, it is a badly bruised market: T, AXP, GT, DD, MMM, KO, PG, JPM. |
