I still think the big advantage is cost. Smartcard readers cost as little as $6.00 to make. Combine a fingerprint scanner on a smartcard, and you've got a very low-cost end-user biometric authentication system...the kind that could be used for digital cash, home banking etc... When you're talking about end-users in the millions, the cost of the enrollment station (which is probably nothing more than a PC), is insignificant.

IMO, the thing that has kept biometrics out of the mainstream is plain and simply cost.

IDtek may be onto something. Maybe IDX should look into buying them too....
