The rules say that if a musher loses a dog he or she is disqualified so the mushers do everything they can to prevent it, A few dogs do die some years. Sometimes a moose gets in the trail where it can't be seen until it's too late. When that happens a musher can lose a whole team. I think they all carry a firearm just for that reason. I would say the Iditarod is the toughest endurance race there is. I know only one musher but she has never been in the Iditarod. She did, however, appear in one of those DeWars ads where they say "Mushing is my profession; DeWars is my scotch," etc. The mushers love their dogs. They have to because they have to feed them every day to keep them it top shape. It takes Susan Butcher almost six hours a day just to feed all her dogs. Personally, mushing is not my bag -- too much fussing around. It's not comparable to Greyhound racing at all. They go through Greyhounds by the dozens just to find one that will be competitive. The rest are adopted out or killed. I know because my dentist raised them until his wife ran away with the trainer. Myself, I think it's a preposterous sport, but each to his own. My big beef is with the "animal rightists" who have enough time to muddle in other people's business but don't mind their own. They would be better served to buy dog food and give it to the humane society. What kind of animals do you like? Cats, I bet. My dog Annie is one of my heroes. She deserves a special place in Heaven.
