Thanks John, that is a good article. They propose a question as to VOD models and technologies, but they ignore to a large degree the business and revenue implications of their question. The cable companies spent billions to create the 750 mhz pipe and then more to make it work as a two way interactive network. They need to now exploit it to generate revenues from their subscribers. What some cables have already run into with the @home service is the limitations of hom much video can be downloaded before the internet users begin to clog the pipe and slow down the system.

It was this worry that was one of the factors that led designers to not put storage at the set top box level, but simply stream it from the head end on demand. If internet users can one day all start downloading movies and other things for free off the internet and clogging the pipe without paying the MSO for the bandwidth, then their billions in invetment will fly out of the window. That is why they are restricting usage on @home as currently. Services such as Intertainer (not mentioned in this article, but cental to the theme they touch on) have created the solution. They will be the portal that will utilize the internet based broadband IP solution, yet they will be a paid for service anc charge for movies with a revenue share for the cable MSO. Why would the cable let you download free movies and clog the pipe so that a paying revenue and profit generating Intertainer subscriber can't download a paid for Movie.

This is not the reality of the business. The new models or technologies may be novel and have applications in the internet world, but they won't replace the current VOD model. Also it seems the author of the article didn't have an understanding of the sevices that will be offered alongside the VOD system as an interactive counterpart such as Wink, Worldgate and Interactive channel. These are all about merging the web and the TV programming into a seamless experience for the subscriber. It is a good article, but they end it with a question and the answer to that question is yes and no.
