Not entirely true. It depends on the brokerage and the account. Most don't allow margin on stocks under $5 true... but, a stock above $5 is certainly not guaranteed marginable. New issues, (usually under 1 year pubicly traded) also are generally not marginable and now some brokerages are setting different qualifications for "high flyers" or I stocks. You just don't know for sure except, stocks that have been trading at least a couple years, above $5, in other than the "internet" area are in fact usually marginable.
