Note: I don't own shares of GNET though I've been monitoring the company since the SI acquisition (and currently kicking myself!).

When looking at the synergies possible, I think the most likely acquirer of GNET (assuming no major shifts) is Compaq if we assume that Russ would sell out.

Compaq needs to flesh out its Alta Vista site with more content if it is going to compete against the likes of Yahoo, Lycos, MSN, Netcenter, and Excite. GNET would cover several of these gaps. However, the hidden jewel in any Compaq deal is the access it gains with all of GNET's Netmarket businesses. How many small businesses are being added to this site per week? Alot. And each one of them is a potential CPQ computer or small business services buyer. Can you say more customers and sales for CPQ's newly purchased Web-based transaction system?

The only complication I see is that GNET's stock price has run up too much to make a combination feasible by most financial metrics. It would take a seriously gutsy call on part of senior CPQ managers (who are still trying to convince the Street of the wisdom of the Digital acquisition) to jump in at this time.
