All throughout history, including our own revolutionary forefathers, people have villified and demonized the "other side." It is just such a tempting thing to do when reason and rationality fails to win the day. Debates can get ugly no matter what century they're in. Look no further than the debates over slavery, those were neither rational nor calm. Distance from a period may make it seem much more calm and rational then it actually was, and insults then were so much more high brow than they are now (of course those are the insults preserved in PRINT, God knows what they yelled at each other in the street which is essentially what SI is, an electronic street.)
