Gold is more difficult to hide.

For one, your mattress will feel lumpy and you'll have to prop up the floorboard underneath should you choose to hide gold over in the traditional manner.... <vbg>

But mainly it is because gold is a commodity, not a currency. There is no legal impediment to the government confiscating it and reimbursing you in greenbacks.
