01/15/1999 - 20,000 'Smart' Microcars Delivered By End of 98
Frankfurt, Germany - After sales of the tiny, two-passenger "Smart" urban microcars launched in the fall (News Notes 10/12/98), about 20,000 were delivered to customers by the end of 1998, reports Reuters. The company originally formed as a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and the maker of Swatch watches became a wholly owned DaimlerChrysler subsidiary at the beginning of 1999. DaimlerChrysler then changed the name of the company from Micro Compact Car GmbH to Micro Compact Car smart GmbH and moved its headquarters to Germany from Switzerland. The $8,500 "Smart" is just over eight feet long and gets 50 miles per gallon of gasoline. The two companies reportedly split after a disagreement over making a hybrid-electric version of the car (News Notes 11/5/98).
