Have you tried having them write stories that one person starts then passes on to the next person to continue, etc... It can be a good way of stimulating creativity.

Also, writing plays about everyday situations, or about some particular news story that interests students. Encourage them to use "real language" and to try to visualize how the play might be performed...props, lighting, etc... Could be fun.
