Linda, OT *** on-line trading ***
Because of the low reliability of online trading it is advisable
to have one account that can be accessed directly from your computer,
using the broker's proprietary software [NOT the internet].
With internet trading at least two things can go wrong: your
ISP could be unaccessible and the broker's internet site could
be slow or down. Schwab has eSchwab software you install on
your PC. I believe Waterhouse and DLJ also have proprietary
trading software. For a frequent trader [which I'm not], it makes
sense to have two PCs with a different ISP on each and two
brokers that can be accessed from either one.

On ISPs for SF Bay area residents: I switched to Pathlink.
$10 per month for unlimited access. [may go to $15 after
6 months]. Calling support you get a LIVE person on the
second or third ring! I had software problems preventing
access and they patiently walked me through the fix.
I had been paying $20 with Pacbell. Pathlink's service is
equivalent to the higher priced ISPs. If anyone signs up
with them, please mention my e-mail address [maugott@pathlink.com]. Then I get a week free for the referral. They had an hour or so downtime this week [pre-announced, so they could upgrade] and gave each customer a free week for the inconvenience.
