Scott,

Speaking as an electronic engineer, I belive that Rambus have (or will soon have) a patent on the application of a *fundamental* piece of physics to memory technology.

Their technique depends on carefully placing the tracks and the electrical load of the DRAM pins on the board of the memory module. This is done using transmission line theory, to guarantee that the signals travel quickly and cleanly to up to 32 RDRAMS in sequence, and the signal traces are terminated with RC networks to prevent signal reflections.

The laws of physics mean that there is simply no other way to make the signals travel at the necessary speed. Controlled impedance is the key.

I believe this is so fundamental they will collect royalties for the entire life of their patents. The industry will not find a "workaround" for the laws of physics.

So I'm going to sit this out.

Ian
