My .02...get the kids to write about something "real" too (ie, non-fiction). Could be about anything...but goal would be to help kids write really good paragraphs that flow and make sense. You could teach your kids paragraph writing techniques such as "Three Specific Examples." The kids come up with 3 facts/thoughts they think are important and write them in order from least compelling to most compelling, then a conclusion. The result is a really intelligent paragraph that sticks to and completes a thought. Here is an example right off top of my head:

"I like the pizza from Tony's Place better than Pizza World's pizza. First, Tony's makes their pizza to order. Pizza World already has the dough made, so it is a little greasy. Also, Tony's puts more sauce on their pizza than Pizza World. I like lots of sauce on my pizza. But the biggest reason why I like Tony's pizza better than Pizza World's is Tony's puts much more toppings on their pizzas. The last time I was at Tony's, I counted twenty pepperoni slices on the pizza. Pizza World's pizza only had eleven! If you like pizza, I definitely recommend Tony's over Pizza World."

There are full grown adults who can't write an easy-to-follow, coherent paragraph like the one above. Teach your kids to do that and you will have provided a BIG service. Good luck at school and your investments if any :-)
