At least two midsize networking companies are still hoping to be acquired. Sources say Cabletron Systems Inc. (CS) and Newbridge Networks Corp. (NN) have each hired merger advisors to seek out potential suitors.

In recent weeks, several financial Web sites have indicated that Cabletron CEO Craig Benson has held high-level meetings with Lucent, Ericsson, Compaq Computer Corp. and ATM pioneer Fore Systems Inc.

Financial analysts note that Cabletron and Fore have partnered in the past, and Lucent has deployed Cabletron gear throughout its corporate network. Also, Cabletron has a sales relationship with Compaq that involves the former Digital Equipment Corp. Compaq now owns Digital, while Cabletron in 1997 acquired Digital's networking division.

Cabletron and Newbridge officials declined to comment about possible business combinations.
