Murray,
>>I'm not quite sure what you mean.
By only concentrating on high-end models in a market where maybe 10% of the people wanted (and were willing to pay for) the best machines, Apple almost went under. With their large numbers, low-end models pay for the overhead (OS development, manufacturing economies-of-scale on common components, appeal to third-party developers, large number of resellers, increased marketing budget, etc.). The iMac is a necessary part of the business model in order to provide you with professional equipment at an affordable cost. Apple's management has been so inept for the last decade that we are lucky we can buy one today.
This is why Ferrari, Maserati, etc. always end up being owned by the company that makes Fiats.
Cheers,
