If a big telecom vendor Lucent swallowed Ascend now Cisco needs a big telecom vendor to face Lucent. Who is Cisco going to choose as partner? I can tell you one thing: It is not going to be easy for a customers' premises equipment maker such as Cisco to attack the market of the big telecom vendors. Cisco needs tp partner with companies such as Alcatel.
