Michael,
I had some wonderful debates in law school, with really brilliant people who I totally disagreed with. For the most part these debates were insult free and did not result in residual animosity. I think you must always pick WHO you choose to argue with very carefully. Some people invest way too much of their sense of self into whether they "win" arguments and this has probably always been the case. IMO when you are dealing with intelligent informed adults you have very little chance of changing a persons opinions in an argument. The best you can hope for is a thorough exploration of your topic, and possible softening of positions on both sides. There is very little point arguing with adults who take strong positions on emotional/religous grounds because no matter how marvelous your skills of rhetoric, the argument cannot be joined.
