Internet Voice Services Market to Reach $63 Billion by 2002
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 29, 1997--A new study from Killen & Associates, "Internet Voice: Opportunities and Threats," forecasts that global voice/Internet services revenues will top $63 billion by the year 2002 from $741 million in 1997.
Approximately 48% of the 2002 revenues will be generated in North America while 33% will come from Europe.
The bad news for carriers is that the revenues generated by voice/Internet traffic will mostly supplant plain old telephone service (POTS) revenues, according to the study. Users will embrace voice over the Internet primarily because it offers tremendous savings.
"Voice/Internet cannot be ignored by carriers," said Karl Duffy, director, Telecommunications Services.
"Increased voice/Internet traffic forces carriers to reevaluate their existing equipment and operations. Local exchange carriers (LECs) need to redesign plants and change billing practices. Interexchange carriers (IXCs) must ensure that their networks have greater capacity for the additional load requirements of voice/Internet (and later multimedia/Internet)."
"Internet Service providers (ISPs) have a difficult battle ahead to establish and maintain voice/Internet market share as the deep-pocketed LECs and IXCs undoubtedly will compete fiercely to win the lion's share of this market," stated Duffy.
The 160-page study includes profiles of key players including LECs -- Ameritech, GTE, BellSouth, and Hongkong Telecom; IXCs -- AT&T, France Telecom, and Sprint; ISPs -- AOL, BBN, CompuServe, and Sing- Net; Software providers -- Lotus Development, Microsoft, Netscape, NetSpeak, Novell, and VocalTec; network switching and on-premise equipment manufacturers -- Alcatel, Compression Labs, Lucent, NEC, and Siemens; and PC and Internet server manufacturers -- Compaq, Digital Equipment, Hewlett-Packard, and Sun Microsystems.
