On a tour through the Krim countryside (East of Main and North of the black Sea) he conquered for her ladyship, Potemkin pointed out a great number of lovely huts he had build for the peasants there. (hence the words Potemkin Villages)

Come now, Eddy, that's not the story at all. Potemkin was Catherine's minister. What he did was construct his villages so that they'd be seen by foreign dignitaries he was escorting on a grand tour. It wasn't the Empress who was scammed, as I recall.
