David,

"3D Systems has essentially surrendered the office concept modeling market to Stratasys (SSYS). 3D Systems' primary market continues to be service centers and manufacturing centers."

While this statement was true in the past it is no longer so with the release of the Actua 2100 modeler from 3D.

I work in the Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing Lab at Georgia Tech. We have had an SLA 250 for about a year and a half and have just accepted delivery on an 1600 from Stratasys. While it is nice to have a little bit more durable parts, the accuracy and finishing qualities of the FDM are not as good as SLA. We use our prototyping equipment to create masters for rapid tooling processes, so the accuracy is the primary concern.

We are getting an Actua 2100 in March, so I'll let you know what I think of it then. My understanding is that the machine is very fast (much faster than SLA or FDM), produces accurate parts (on the order of the SSYS machine) but that the material is a wax, and hence not functional.
