The Greek source for the sentence "You should not kill" (I have no love of archaism) is better translated as "You should not [commit] murder". The invocation is not against taking a life. It is against unjustly doing so. Wars, executions, self-defense - no foul. The concept of absolute sanctity of life is not universal to Christianity. The Catholics ran with it however - and here we are.
