Gore has skillfully (and typically) maneuvered himself into a box, from which he can only back out, or be buried in.

Since he relies so heavily on the polls for direction, he has apparently concluded that aligning himself with, and defending, the president is less harmful politically that not. I would guess he realizes that he's carrying so much of Slick's baggage already (plus a few good-sized bags of his own) that, appearing to be "loyal to the end" may earn him some points with his base voters.
