Yup, Cats are cool...I love horses, too. I was under the mistaken impression that the dogs only died in rare instances...I must say that if the competitors are aware that there animals aren't necessarily going to survive...we're pushing the envelope of "a basic disrespect for life/nature". I'm not an "animal rights-ist" in the "card carrying member" sense, but I don't find the value in the event, for the humans or the dogs. People need to think in terms of autonomy when they are attempting to test their endurance...relying on other living creatures proves nothing to me other than the fact that we have way too many control freaks dominating too many animals for no real reason other than EGO GRATIFICATION. I'd rather see a human being walk the 100 miles...and I'd be much more impressed with that accomplishment.
So, I'm changing my answer: The Iditerod is anachronistic and provides no value. If the animals suffer and at times die, it's a waste.
Product endorsements aren't a good enough reason...does the "winner" get paid handsomely?
