Hello BAM,

The only way that I have found to use MP3 is with the "BitCasting.com" plug-in for G2. The architecture of G2 is very good -- allowing developers to develop these plug-ins ... but the BitCasting plug-in appears to just use the Microsoft Media-Player MP3 Codec ... so when I tried to use it I got a pop-up message saying that I needed to install Microsoft's competitive product! That's not good!

Yes ... WinAMP and ShoutCast are the developing revolution ... the emerging technology ... it's like Mosaic which progressed into Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. The first dominant Internet streaming media player was Real and this has been in their favor. And they have been running hard since to keep ahead and it has paid off. But it is only a matter of time before other alternatives will appear - such as WinAMP - which will challenge their position and leadership ... it's the "anti-king-of-the-hill" syndrome ... much like the "alternative to Microsoft" syndrome. ;-)

> And you're right, it's late...

That's what I don't like ... it's the first time that I saw, what I feel, is a poor decision from Real management ... it's not a permanent error, just an error at this point in time of evolution of streaming media ... in my opinion. ;-)

> Impressive report on the WinAMP download traffic!

Yes ... I work in a variety of circles in the Industry and WinAMP is gaining a huge "cult" status ... it's like Linux ... but it runs on Windows and Mac so it's not so controversial ... it is picking up everywhere ...

> If RNWK can play this MP3 bingo with a press release, it's $100.

I agree ... then need to make a statement and decide to dominate in this market. They need to understand that it's not worth losing this market to protect a bunch of has-been companies. They need to stay on their agressive offense ... it's like Justin said in his interview ... he isn't worried about working with anyone on building in mechanisms to copyprotect ... bootlegging is going to happen anyhow, let the lawyers go after the criminals ... he's building wide open plumbing that can be used for *any* purpose ...

I'm setting up my ShoutCast server this weekend to test and play with ... I'm going to get a ShoutCast radio station going ... ;-) I'll let you know what I find. I've played with the free RealMedia Server and have one running also ... very nice polished product ...

I've loved following the talk about NOVL for some time now ... a lot of doubtful people, but Eric Schmidt is an amazing person ... I enjoy seeing the changes that he is effecting ... and obviously the market approves also! ;-)
