iMac falls to #3 in December retail sales

Apparently, the initial burst of success for the iMac couldn't last forever. The latest figures from PC Data, a respected source on statistics for retail sales, shows that the iMac has fallen from its #1 perch in November to #3 in December for retail sales.

The top 2 computers both came from Compaq. #1 was the Presario 5170 T6/350/MMX 128/10.0 32X 56K Zip W98, and #2 was the Presario 5150 A6-2/350/MMX 128/8.0 32X 56K W98. However, Apple's iMac still beat out popular computers from Hewlett Packard, E-Machines, and Packard Bell.

This week, along with positive earnings from Apple, many analysts downgraded their outlook on the company's future financial success due to a potential slow in the sales of iMacs during the second quarter of 1999. Today, another firm, Sands Brothers, resounded those worries by downgrading Apple's stock to "Buy" from "Strong Buy."

It should be noted, however, that many industry experts are looking to the revved colorful iMacs announced at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco to revitalize sales.
