Your idea is interesting and useful...possibly. I, for one, will find it hard to believe, though. I do alot of my own work around the house...building, changing...etc. I also know my way around a car. However, I bought some design packages for the house (the kind you run on computer) to see what I could come up with. It's garbage. There are too many variables to contend with, and you have to make sure you are fully aware of zoning laws (for a car, consider emission and inspection laws, which vary from state to state). My next door neighbor is a construction engineer. He looked at some of my designs and laughed. He said "They look good, and I can see why you'd like to do these things." The problem is, it appears, that architects and builders can't always build things exactly right due to all the variables. The engineer told me of some architects' plans he's basically thrown away due to problems of locality and design. He said it gets worse when people like me try to do it all ourselves, too. Costs rise due to changes that need to be made and various other problems.... I can only imagine that similar issues exist with cars. I like the concept...I just don't see it coming to fruition. At least, not anytime soon. In the meantime, I am content to design a car from assigned variables that are given by the manufacturer (Saturn basically does this). Perhaps in good time, it will come to pass. |
