Sony recalled the removable storage drives because of a design flaw

In view of the Sony HiFD's much vaunted "compatibility" with regular 3.5" floppy disks and thus the so-called "advantage" of the HiFD's dual purpose function, the real design flaw is you have to have a regular floppy disk drive in your machine to install the software for a Sony HiFD drive to begin with.

Since that is the case, why would anyone want to buy a "dual function" drive they obviously don't need? What am I missing here?
