I agree that in a greenfield country like China the revenues available from building a backbone are a larger proportion of total costs than in the US, but I would still argue that when you you consider all of the last mile (from the handsets to the MSC's) that the last mile probably is bigger than the cost for the backbone (for the reasons I gave in my reply to the bullfighter). Also it should be noted that China in particular is starting to develop their own switching equipment (it is generally possible to get by with older technology than in the wireless portion of the loop?) and will start using foreign manufacturers less. (I'd have to try to find where I read that, but it was in some reputable mainstream source .)
