Get yourself a compass and a protractor. Sight in on the azimuth and elevation for your position, and walk around the yard to find a spot where you can shoot through at that az and el. It does not have to be much, just a few degrees. Even if you have trees, if there is an opening through the trees that will not be blocked by leaves or branches growing and occluding the opening, you will be ok. The important thing is to sight in at the precise azimuth and elevation, because you really only have a couple of degrees of freedom either way and the signal will roll off. You might think you are blocked, yet when you sight in very carefully you will find an opening. Similarly, you might think you are clear, and yet there might be something in the way. That is why it is impossible to eyeball, you have to use a compass and a protractor or other tool to set an elevation. I'm speaking from experience, having trees all around me and having to search very hard to find a good spot in my back yard to shoot through. If anyone were to see my installation, they would not think that I had a clear line of sight, and yet I do. Just barely, but enough. And I have had no problem with the installation after more than one year. |
