SOURCE: Public Broadcasting Service PBS and Intel Collaborate on Enhanced DTV Program for Children

PASADENA, Calif., Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Intel Corporation [Nasdaq:INTC - news] and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) today announced the first enhanced digital television (DTV) program for children. The new program, called ZOBOOMAFOO™, builds on the success of the world's first nationwide enhanced DTV broadcast with Ken Burns's FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT in November. The announcement was made at the Television Critics Association Press Tour.

ZOBOOMAFOO, the latest offering from innovative filmmakers Martin and
Chris Kratt, is a new wildlife series for preschoolers premiering on PBS stations Jan. 25, 1999. The interactive enhanced program, scheduled for broadcast later this year, offers an example of exciting opportunities for educational interactivity both during and after a DTV broadcast.

When the enhanced ZOBOOMAFOO is broadcast, companion data will be
transmitted simultaneously in the television signal to state-of-the-art Intel® Architecture-based personal computers capable of receiving digital signals. With these personal computers, ZOBOOMAFOO viewers will be able to interact with on-screen animations that come to life with a mouse click; assist the program's hosts, Chris and Martin Kratt, figure out the mystery animal of the day; or play an interactive on-screen game unique to the enhanced broadcast. Children will also be able to collect enhanced audio, video or graphical media in the form of souvenirs, which they can interact with after the broadcast. Games kids can play as part of the enhanced broadcast include: Animal Alphabet Scrapbook; Animal Matching Game; Who's In the Hole Game; and a Closet Adventure Game.

''PBS shares Intel's vision of the future of enhanced DTV
broadcasting,'' said Ron Whittier, senior vice president, Intel's
Content Group. ''Their quality programming places significant emphasis
on learning and education -- areas that are complementary to Intel's
interests -- and those translate nicely into enhanced broadcast
content.''

''Something extraordinary will happen as the interactivity and universal reach of digital TV meet the PBS tradition of education and fun for children,'' said John Hollar, executive vice president, PBS Learning Ventures. ''Kids will interact, learn, play and use our programming in ways that will delight them and their families as well. Our collaboration with Intel is bringing this future to life today.''

''We always look for ways to interject interactivity into our
programs,'' said ZOOBOOMAFOO co-host Chris Kratt. ''What excites us the most about this wonderful Intel/PBS project is that it has allowed us to accomplish that and get that much closer to our viewers -- the kids we want to help learn about animals and the world around them.'' Mr. Kratt worked closely with Intel and PBS on the creative development of the enhanced ZOOBOOMAFOO.
