A clinical trial would be halted early if the treatment showed overwhelming superiority to the control arm. This is especially true when one of the outcomes is death. It would be unethical to continue the trial. The trial may be prolonged if the death rate in the control arm is lower than expected. It is ludicrous to think that a clinical trial be extended because the treatment works to well.
