My dad had this 8mm movie camera which would get ceremoniously unlimbered at Christmas, birthdays and the high points of family travel. He would spend the odd evening splicing together a big archive reel when the mail brought those characteristic yellow envelopes from Kodak. Then once in a while we would have a Family Film Evening. The whole family would gather in the living room - the projector and screen would be set up with much fuss - everyone would take their seats and the young'uns would receive a stern invocation against shenanigans.
The film would run, and maybe a favorite reel (Christmases or birthdays). The projector would clatter, the color images would flicker on the glass-bead screen, and there would be lively repartee about acts performed when we were smaller and oh so much less sophisticated than Right Then.

A few years ago, my dad transcribed the "Childhood Films" onto a videocassette. I watched them with Spouse in silence. It just wasn't the same - and it took me a while to realize that the ambience hadn't made it onto the tape.
