As you might recall, I have treated of this perceived cusp in our evolution. As genetic engineering becomes a science, we will have the ability to direct our form and function. This will be revolutionary. We may not even need to become man-machines. I think meat may be flexible enough to do a lot. Have you read Charles Sheffield's sci-fi? He deals with this subject and its possibilities in an entertaining manner. Sight of Proteus and Proteus Unbound sorta jump to mind.
