Joe wants to get the price of stocks like cmgi down, so to load up on them; what better way to do it than to start a scurrilous rumor, bolstered by referring to someone at "Oppenheimer". It is one thing to spread rumors based on fact, but something entirely else to begin a rumor in order to enhance a short position. Where the legal and moral line is in that, is pretty clear to me. When these stocks go up, you and Joe and other shorts, may lose your shirts.
