Anything can happen in the market. It wasn't too long ago that IBM was at a split adjusted $20. Sure, it didn't stay there long- but it happened. GE is the only firm left in the original DJIA. Any idea what happened to the others? Firms in this sector have gone out of business during similar downturns. As for politicians, Gore's anti- fossil fuel initiatives may very well put the final nail in the coffin for this sector.
