Transitioning to a complete Fiber To The Curb (FTTC) set up will take ten to fifteen
years. During that time period the battle for market share will be
important. The competition from cable companies and their Hybrid Fiber
Coax and other RBOC's invading their territory with better modems will be important.
If for example in five years you have 20% FTTC and 80% with inferior
ADSL modems. You could lose 80% of those customers and have to immediately
either upgrade to better ADSL or go straight to FTTC at an enormous cost.

If you can hold on to all those customers with DMT ADSL/VDSL and generate huge revenue
while transitioning to FTTC you will get there much more cost effectively
and be the winner in the end.
