Good Thing is Coming to AMKR? ASTSF -- Advanced Semiconductor Engineering -- a fine company and a pure play of chip packaging and testing company and direct competitor of AMKR in Taiwan (its Chinese name is called Sun-Moon-Light). According to US/Taiwan Semiconductor Conference '98 held in Santa Clara, CA, Dec. 9-10 (with a lot good speakers, and some good food, too), ASTSF has 4700 employees and 1998 revenue was about US$ 513 million (estimated). With these numbers, in addition to its market capitalization of $1.6 billion and PE 38, AMKR is only about 1/3 of the price of ASTSF. Other differences? AMKR has much longer history (30 years), and is THE INDUSPUTABLELY LARGEST and THE MOST ADVACED chip packaging/testing companies with numerous patents in the semiconductor industry sector. And finally, AMKR is a US company vs. ASTSF is a foreign company. Last Friday (1/15/99), ASTSF was closed at 41 3/8, UP 8 1/2.
