It's true that Lucent is playing catchup with Nortel and Cisco in data networking, because Nortel bought Bay earlier, and Cisco has always been there. But there is nothing wrong with playing catch up, as long Lucent catches up and surpasses. I don't worry about Lucent's lacking of routers. Lucent never said that it's done with acquisitions, and don't forget Bell Labs. Who knows what they are working on. We only know that it has a history of making products that changed the world, it will only do it again and again.

On a macro level, rather than looking at the Ascend acquisition as a catchup, I see it more as complimenting Lucent's current product line. Lucent has expressed that it's going after the carrier customers, not the enterprise customers. Cisco dominanted the enterprise market by being a one stop shop; Lucent will be a one stop shop for carrier customers. As for Nortel, it didn't seem to be as ready when it first acquired Bay. I hope that the restructure would not take too long. Otherwise, NT holders would suffer.
