(In reference to your earlier post regarding Creative using SmartMedia for its mp3 player,) I see this as a very bad news.
The only consumer market that Sandisk sells with volume is CompactFLASH for digital cameras. It is undisputed that digital camera will be a huge market, but I think mp3 can be a bigger market. Likely, mp3 will replace portable CD player, cassette walkman, and mini-disc portables. And the explosion of MPman will be much faster than digital camera. If MMC doesn't get into the mp3 market fast, SmartMedia may reach a volume production level that its cost can be significantly reduced. If this does happen, SmartMedia will be able to attack and explore new markets. It's very hard to play catchup in the consumer market, which is very volume sensitive. This is a war, no time to waste, and I don't see Sandisk acting (and reacting) fast enough. FLASH will be HUGE, much bigger than just the digital camera market. This is why I am interested in SNDK. Sandisk needs to focus more on what's happenning in the market. If the company fails to stress realistic markets such mp3, it may never be the huge success that each of us is hoping.
Looking into the future, the competition will only get more fierce when Sony gets in. The road ahead is getting bumpier for Sandisk, and the management will be challenged more than ever before.
