I can see your point, really, I can. But, pragmatism is not the only thing that is operating here. The transient beauty of flowers is, nevertheless, intense, and soul-gladdening. You are wrong to say "nobody really needs" flowers. Some people really need flowers. I have learned to buy them for myself, when I need them. The gesture seems to have taught my husband something, that it wasn't just another reason for nagging him.
Funerals are for the living, not for the dead. Once you are dead, you don't get to tell people what to do, anymore. But, I am all for going to Hawaii or Vegas while you can still enjoy it, if you want that. We are thinking about England this summer, maybe the British Museum and Glastonbury, and Stonehenge. The husband wants to go without the kids, and the kids don't want to be left behind, so I am just going to get passports for everyone and we will let it all happen as it will. |
