Thanks much Spots (you too, Sean.) Alas, I haven't got this fixed so far.

I think I'm actually in a domain, not a workgroup, since I'm using DHCP rather than given IP addresses (with US West, my DSL ISP, controlling the whole shebang. Don't know how much this would alter any of the info you've included...

I did get the SID utility (after some hassle--powerquest is going way overboard on the security IMHO.) I used this to change the name and SID, and that seemed to go fine. Still the same problem though.

Yes, exactly. And that's still the way it's happening.

I'm about to try your next solution (adding a new account)... more in a minute, but I'll post now since you just posted yourself, and your advice may evolve given this info...
